in initial position and with the digraph "rr," the singer should choose between the velar fricative [x] (rua ['xu.ɐ], carro ['ka.x℧]) or the lightly rolled [r] (rua ['ru.ɐ], carro ['ka.r℧]).

The rolled "r" must never be exaggerated, as it is in Italian. It is never wrong to use the lightly rolled "r" and it is easier for non-Brazilian choirs to use this sound. However, the velar fricative corresponds more to spoken BP and can be used without fear. In large-scale choral-symphonic works, operas or in very large theaters, or in the case of pre-twentieth-century music, the rolled "r" is preferred. In any case, once the choice has been made, it must be followed consistently throughout the entire composition.
